Background
Researchers have made significant progress in developing systems that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) video to English text, particularly in controlled research conditions. These systems typically employ computer vision and machine learning algorithms to recognize and interpret the manual and non-manual features of ASL, such as handshapes, facial expressions, and body language. In ideal research conditions, with high-quality video recordings and limited vocabulary, these systems have achieved impressive accuracy rates, demonstrating the potential for automated ASL translation.
