Researchers are exploring the use of social robots that can provide physical comfort, such as holding hands or providing physical touch, but these systems are still in the early stages of development. The ability of AI to provide comfort to a dying person is an area of ongoing research, with a focus on developing empathetic and compassionate virtual companions.
Currently, AI systems lack the physical presence and human-like touch required to comfort a dying person in the way a thoughtful human would, which involves physical contact and empathy. While AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can offer emotional support and companionship through text or voice interactions, they cannot replicate the physical aspect of human comfort. The current state of the art in AI focuses on developing more sophisticated virtual companions, but these are still far from being able to provide the same level of physical comfort as a human.
