AI systems are being explored for their potential to provide emotional support and companionship, including sitting with someone who is grieving. These systems can be designed to be empathetic and understanding, using natural language processing to respond to emotional cues and provide comfort. After careful deliberation, the jury could not bring itself to award a full “yes” to whether artificial empathy equals real consolation, though two members nodded as far as “almost,” seeing in chatbots a flicker of comfort that still can’t carry the full weight of true presence. The minority hesitated, sensing that simulated solace, however polished, remains a shadow on the cave wall rather than the fire itself. Justice rests with a cautious concurrence: “Almost is not enough when the heart expects more.”
